Blue is a very prominent colour in the West Indies for a variety of random reasons, my favourite being that at night, everything appears to be covered in the richest shades of island blue you can imagine.
In similar fashion, Trinidadian landscape artist Peter Sheppard immortalized this fact via his ongoing 2012 Port of Spain exhibition at Y Art Gallery, simply titled, Blue.
Featuring a range of nighttime scenes - from the frothing beaches to lush countryside expanses - Sheppard's finely detailed acrylics make me long for a relaxing weekend back home, lounging somewhere along the Northern Range.
I'm particularly fond of the first piece, River. There's a stillness in the composition, and the gradated colouring brings to mind those quiet moments right before dawn breaks.
Don't let the depth of the works fool you, though; each of the 24 pieces are, on average, no more than 2"x2". Around $290.00 usd per painting, it's really a tiny price to pay.
I believe the exhibit runs until February 25th 2012...
